What is Codependency?
Codependency is a pattern of behavior where you rely on someone else for your sense of self-worth and emotional needs. It often involves putting the needs of others before your own, to the point where it negatively impacts your well-being. For teens, this can mean constantly seeking approval from friends, feeling responsible for others’ happiness, or struggling to set boundaries in relationships.
My Story
Growing up, I faced many challenges, including living in abusive homes and being bullied. These experiences made it difficult for me to form healthy relationships. As a teen, I often put others' needs ahead of my own, thinking it was the only way to be loved and accepted. This continued into my adult life, affecting my relationships with my own children. They, too, faced their own issues, such as growing up without a father and dealing with mental health and addiction struggles.
Recognizing Codependency
Here are some signs that you might be dealing with codependency:
People-Pleasing:
You go out of your way to make others happy, often at your own expense.
Difficulty Setting Boundaries:
You find it hard to say no and often feel obligated to help others, even when it’s inconvenient.
Your self-worth is tied to how others perceive you, and you constantly seek validation from friends and family.
Fear of Abandonment:
You worry that people will leave you if you don’t meet their needs or expectations.
Taking on Too Much Responsibility:
You feel responsible for others’ problems and emotions, trying to fix or manage their issues.
Breaking Free from Codependency
Understanding codependency is the first step toward breaking free from these unhealthy patterns.
